Sample collection and shipment: what and how to send
  • General recommendations for collection and shipment of blood samples
  • Samples for molecular genetic testing
  • Samples for cytogenetic testing

General recommendations for collection and shipment of blood samples

Overview
  • Drawing can be performed any time of the day without fasting.
  • Please collect the samples for any genetic testing under sterile conditions, this is in particular important for any samples which eventually require a cell culture (e.g. any form of chromosome analysis).
  • Please label each vial carefully with both name and DOB of your patient.
  • For shipment from foreign countries you may use regular mail, if arrival can be expected within the next 3-4 days, otherwise please use a regular air currier and don't forget to include a custom declaration; shipment at the end of the week should be avoided.

Samples for molecular genetic testing

Overview

We accept:

  • Venous blood
  • 10 ccm K-EDTA vials
    Children: 1 - 5 ccm
  • Genomic DNA
  • at least 1 µg (conc. at least 100 ng/µl)
  • Amniotic fluid*
  • 15 ccm in a steril vial or confluent cell culture vials filled up with sterile medium
  • Chorionic villi* /
    abortion material
  • 5-10 mg tissue in sterile physiological sodium chloride solution
  • Additional types of samples
    are accepted on request:
  • e.g. paraffin sections, oral mucosa sampling, Guthrie Cards or other sampling of dry blood drops

Samples for cytogenetic testing

Overview
Any sample intended for cytogenetic testing and / or tissue culture:
Is not allowed to be frozen and has to be drawn under sterile conditions.
  • Venous blood
  • 10 ccm Lithium-Heparin vials
    Children: 2 - 5 ccm
  • Amniotic fluid*
  • 15-20 ccm in a steril vial or confluent cell culture vials filled up with sterile medium
please always discard the first 2-3 ccm after collection, to avoid maternal contamination
for fast FISH detection of the most frequent aneuploidies the sample is required to be free of visible blood
  • Chorionic villi* /
    abortion material
  • > 15 mg tissue in sterile physiological sodium chloride solution or transport medium
  • Umbilical cord blood*
  • 1 - 2 ccm in sterile Heparin vials

Prior to any shipment of prenatal samples we recommend, that you contact us and explicitely label your sample as prenatal, in order to warrant preferential workup
